The life of Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.) stands out in Islamic history as a powerful reminder about fairness, truth and ethical behaviour in business. He was sent to guide two major communities – the people of Madyan and the people of Aykah. Both societies were known for cheating, corruption and arrogance. Shuayb’s message was simple, but they refused to listen.
His story teaches us how standing for justice, even when the world is against you, becomes a source of reward and honour.
A Prophet with Remarkable Wisdom
Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.) was known for his clear speech, strong reasoning and gentle nature. Some scholars even refer to him as “Khateeb-ul-Ambiya”, meaning the “eloquent speaker among the Prophets,” because he had a calm, persuasive way of guiding people.
He was sent to the people of Madyan, a wealthy civilisation located near present-day Jordan. They were blessed with fertile land, busy trade routes and strong communities. But with wealth came corruption.
The Corruption of Madyan
The people of Madyan were deeply involved in dishonesty. They would:
- Cheat in measurements
- Manipulate scales in business
- Charge unfair prices
- Steal from travellers
- Block trade routes
- Intimidate and bully the weak
- Worship false gods instead of Allah
They saw profit as their only priority, even if it hurt others. Greed had taken over their hearts. Instead of being grateful for blessings, they misused them.
Allah sent Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.) to remind them that dishonesty destroys societies from within.
Shuayb’s Message to His People
Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.) told his people:
- Worship Allah alone
- Stop cheating in business
- Return honesty to trade
- Treat customers fairly
- Avoid corruption and arrogance
- Follow the path of justice
He warned them that cheating may bring short-term profit, but it brings long-term loss – both in this world and the next.
He also reminded them that Allah gives and takes wealth as a test.
Shuayb (A.S.) used wisdom to explain that the community cannot grow when cheating becomes normal. He tried to bring them back to a clean, ethical lifestyle.
Mockery and Rejection
Instead of listening, the chiefs and wealthy traders mocked him. They said:
- “You are too weak.”
- “Your prayers mean nothing to us.”
- “We will not change our ways for you.”
- “If we follow you, we will become poor.”
- “Stop preaching or leave the city.”
They feared that honesty would reduce their profits. Their arrogance blinded them.
Shuayb (A.S.) told them gently that he didn’t want any reward from them – he only wanted to guide them. But they threatened to drive him and his followers out of the land.
This shows how far corruption had spread. Instead of fixing themselves, they wanted to remove the one person telling them the truth.
The Challenge from the Leaders
The leaders challenged Shuayb (A.S.) by asking him to bring punishment if he was telling the truth. This was the same attitude shown by the nations of Nuh (A.S.), Hud (A.S.) and Salih (A.S.).
Shuayb (A.S.) warned them again:
“Don’t destroy yourselves through your own wrong actions. Allah’s mercy is still open for you.”
But their pride only increased. They called him a liar, ignored his message and refused to change.
The Divine Warning
When the people completely rejected the warnings, Allah revealed to Shuayb (A.S.) that the punishment was near.
Shuayb instructed his believers to leave the town before the punishment arrived. They quietly followed him and moved to safety.
The disbelievers carried on with their usual fraud, laughing and celebrating, unaware of what was coming.
The Punishment Arrives
Allah sent a series of punishments to the people of Madyan:
- A Terrible Heatwave
A burning heat struck the land. No shade or water could protect them. The entire region became unbearable.
- A Dark Cloud
After days of suffering, a huge cloud appeared. The people rushed toward it, thinking it would bring rain and cool winds.
But the cloud was not a blessing.
- A Mighty Blast
As they gathered under the cloud, a powerful earthquake and a deafening blast struck them at once. Their buildings collapsed, their voices fell silent, and the entire community was destroyed in moments.
Not a single wrongdoer survived.
This punishment is known in Islamic history as Azaab-ul-Yawm az-Zullah – the Punishment of the Cloud.
The People of Aykah
Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.) was also sent to another corrupt society known as the People of Aykah. They worshipped large trees and committed similar acts of cheating and injustice.
They too rejected Shuayb’s message.
Allah punished them with extreme heat, darkness and a violent firestorm.
These two events remind us that oppression and fraud bring consequences.
Shuayb (A.S.) After the Destruction
After witnessing the punishment, Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.) felt deep sorrow – not because the wrongdoers were punished, but because they had so many chances to change and ignored them.
He said:
“I delivered my Lord’s message to you. I advised you sincerely, but you did not love those who give good advice.”
Afterward, Shuayb (A.S.) and his followers lived in peace, continuing to worship Allah and spreading the message of honesty and faith. He spent the rest of his life guiding his people toward fairness and good character.
Key Lessons from the Story of Hazrat Shuayb (A.S.)
- Cheating brings destruction
Whether it’s business, trade or daily life, dishonesty always weakens a community.
- Wealth is a test, not a guarantee
The people of Madyan were rich, but their greed destroyed them.
- Truth requires courage
Shuayb (A.S.) stood up for justice even when everyone opposed him.
- Guidance must come from the heart
He spoke with kindness, not anger – but people only listened when it was too late.
- Allah’s mercy comes before punishment
The warnings came for years. Punishment only arrived when people fully rejected guidance.
