The story of Hazrat Adam (A.S.), the first man and first Prophet in Islam, marks the beginning of human creation and the divine journey of mankind. His story is not just a historical account it is a story of creation, obedience, repentance, and mercy that carries timeless lessons for every believer.
In Islam, Hazrat Adam (A.S.) holds a place of great honour. He was the first human created by Allah Almighty and the first Prophet sent to guide humanity. His life teaches us about Allah’s mercy, the importance of repentance, and the value of humility before our Creator.
The Creation of Hazrat Adam (A.S.)
The creation of Hazrat Adam (A.S.) is one of the greatest signs of Allah’s power. The Holy Qur’an mentions in several verses how Allah created Adam from clay:
“Indeed, We created man from sounding clay, from moulded mud.”
(Surah Al-Hijr, 15:26)
Allah created Adam with His own hands, shaping him perfectly and breathing into him the spirit of life. Unlike any other creation, Adam was blessed with intellect, knowledge, and free will qualities that made him unique among all beings.
Honour Given to Adam (A.S.)
After creating Adam, Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before him not as worship, but as a gesture of respect for Allah’s creation. All angels obeyed except Iblis (Satan), who refused out of arrogance.
“He (Iblis) said: I am better than him; You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
(Surah Sad, 38:76)
Iblis’s pride became the first sin of arrogance. As a result, Allah cast him out of Paradise and cursed him until the Day of Judgment. From that moment, Iblis vowed to mislead Adam and his descendants.
Life in Paradise
Allah blessed Adam (A.S.) with a home in Jannah (Paradise), a place of eternal peace and joy. He was provided with everything he needed. However, Allah also gave him a simple command—a test of obedience.
“O Adam! Dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat freely thereof what you wish; but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:35)
Creation of Hawwa (Eve)
To complete Adam’s life and companionship, Allah created Hawwa (Eve) from Adam’s rib while he was asleep. When Adam woke and saw her, he felt comfort and joy. They lived together peacefully in Paradise, surrounded by beauty, blessings, and the mercy of Allah.
The creation of Hawwa teaches the importance of companionship and unity in human life. From this divine pair, humanity was destined to begin.
The Temptation by Iblis
Iblis, filled with jealousy and anger, plotted to deceive Adam and Hawwa. He whispered to them both, trying to sow doubt in their hearts about Allah’s command.
He said, “Your Lord only forbade you this tree lest you become angels or immortals.”
(Surah Al-A’raf, 7:20)
Deceived by his false promise, Adam and Hawwa ate from the forbidden tree. Immediately,
their state changed—they became aware of their mistake and felt deep shame and regret. Their clothes of light disappeared, and they sought to cover themselves with leaves.
The Descent to Earth
Allah forgave them, but their mistake had consequences. As a part of His divine plan, Allah sent Adam (A.S.) and Hawwa (A.S.) down to Earth. “We said: Go down, all of you, from here. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:38)
Their descent was not a punishment—it was the beginning of humanity’s mission on Earth.
Adam was chosen as the first Khalifah (vicegerent) of Allah, responsible for spreading His
message and establishing justice on Earth.
Repentance and Forgiveness
One of the most beautiful parts of this story is Adam’s repentance. When he realised his
mistake, he immediately turned to Allah in humility and remorse.
“They said: Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not and have mercy upon us, we shall surely be among the losers.”
(Surah Al-A’raf, 7:23)
Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgave them. This teaches every believer that sincere repentance (Tawbah) is always accepted by Allah. No matter the sin, turning back to Him with a humble heart brings forgiveness and renewal.
Life on Earth
Hazrat Adam (A.S.) and Hawwa (A.S.) began their life on Earth, where they lived, worked, and raised children. Allah blessed them with sons and daughters, including Hazrat Habil (Abel) and Hazrat Qabil (Cain).
They were taught to worship Allah alone and to live as righteous servants on Earth. Adam (A.S.) was also given knowledge of everything needed to survive—cultivation, food, clothing, and communication.
The Trial of Habil and Qabil
The story of Habil and Qabil, the sons of Adam, is one of the earliest examples of human
conflict and jealousy. Both brothers were asked to offer a sacrifice to Allah. Habil, who was
righteous and sincere, offered the best of his flock. Qabil, driven by pride, offered inferior crops.
Allah accepted Habil’s offering but rejected Qabil’s, leading Qabil to jealousy and rage. In his anger, Qabil committed the first murder, killing his brother Habil.
When Qabil saw what he had done, he was overcome with guilt. Allah sent a crow to show him how to bury his brother, marking the first burial in human history.
“Then Allah sent a crow scratching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, ‘Woe to me! Am I not even able to be like this crow and hide my brother’s body?’ Then he became of the regretful.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:31)
Prophethood of Adam (A.S.)
As the first Prophet, Adam (A.S.) taught his children about Tawheed (Oneness of Allah),
morality, and righteousness. He was given divine guidance through revelation and acted as the first messenger of Allah on Earth.
He reminded his descendants of their purpose—to worship Allah, live with justice, and follow His commands. He established the foundation for faith that all later Prophets continued, from Hazrat Nuh (Noah A.S.) to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Death of Hazrat Adam (A.S.)
Hazrat Adam (A.S.) lived for about 930 years according to Islamic tradition. Before his death, he gathered his children and reminded them to remain obedient to Allah and follow His path.He was buried on Earth, and angels led his funeral prayer. His wife Hawwa (A.S.) passed awaysoon after, and both are believed to be buried near one another.
Lessons from the Story of Hazrat Adam (A.S.)
The story of Adam (A.S.) is filled with wisdom and guidance for humanity. It reflects our journey from creation to accountability, from sin to repentance.
Here are the core lessons we learn:
1. Allah’s Power and Wisdom – He creates perfectly and for a purpose.
2. Arrogance Leads to Destruction – Iblis’s pride became his downfall.
3. Temptation is a Lifelong Test – Shaytan deceived Adam, and he continues to deceive
mankind.
4. Repentance Opens the Door to Mercy – No sin is greater than Allah’s forgiveness.
5. Obedience Brings Peace – Following divine guidance ensures success in both worlds.
6. Life on Earth is a Trust (Amanah) – We are caretakers, not owners of this world.
Conclusion
The Story of Hazrat Adam (A.S.) is not just about the first man—it is about the essence of humanity. It teaches us where we came from, why we are here, and how we can return to Allah’s mercy through repentance and righteousness.
Adam (A.S.)’s journey from Paradise to Earth reminds us that every fall is a chance to rise higher in faith. His repentance became a model for all believers, showing that no matter how far we stray, Allah’s door of mercy is always open.
May we learn from his humility, seek forgiveness as he did, and strive to live as true servants of Allah.
“Then his Lord chose him, turned to him in forgiveness, and guided him.”
(Surah Ta-Ha, 20:122)
