The Beginning of Creation
Before the world was filled with mountains, oceans, and trees, there was Allah (SWT), Lord of the Heavens and Earth. He created the angels from light and the jinn from smokeless fire. Then, Allah decided to create a new being – Adam (A.S.), who would live on Earth, multiply, and worship Him using reason, knowledge, and free will.
Allah revealed His plan to the angels:
“I will place a khalifah (successor) on Earth.”
The angels, in curiosity, asked why, as they feared humans might cause corruption and bloodshed. Allah replied:
“I know what you do not know.”
This was the beginning of humanity.
The Creation of Adam (A.S.)
Allah created Adam from clay gathered from different parts of the Earth – red, black, and white – symbolizing the diversity of mankind in color, appearance, and nature.
Adam’s form remained lifeless for some time. Iblis, a jinn who worshipped among the angels, inspected Adam’s hollow form and felt envy. He realized Adam would be capable of hunger, thirst, and desire.
When Allah breathed His soul into Adam, he came to life. Allah commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam. They all obeyed—except Iblis.
The Rebellion of Iblis
Iblis refused out of arrogance, saying:
“I am better than him. You created me from fire, and him from clay.”
For this disobedience, Iblis was cursed and expelled from Allah’s mercy until the Day of Judgment. He requested respite until the Resurrection, which Allah granted. Iblis vowed to mislead Adam and his descendants with whispers and deception. Thus began the eternal struggle between truth and falsehood.
Adam (A.S.) in Paradise
Allah honored Adam with knowledge, teaching him the names of all things—knowledge the angels did not possess. When Adam recited them, the angels recognized his superiority.
To bring Adam comfort, Allah created Hawwa (Eve) from Adam’s rib. Together, they lived in the gardens of Paradise with countless blessings. Allah gave them one command:
“Do not approach this tree, or you will be among the wrongdoers.”
The Whisper of Iblis
Iblis deceived Adam and Hawwa, whispering:
“Shall I lead you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that never decays?”
He swore he was a sincere advisor. They were misled and ate from the forbidden tree. Immediately, their garments of light disappeared, and they rushed to cover themselves with leaves.
Allah addressed them:
“Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is your enemy?”
Adam and Hawwa repented with the famous du’a from the Qur’an:
“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.” (Surah Al-A’raf: 23)
Allah forgave them but decreed they must descend to Earth, where mankind’s true journey would begin.
Life on Earth
Adam and Hawwa were sent to Earth, where they faced hunger, thirst, and hardship. Yet Allah guided them through revelation and promised:
-
Those who follow His guidance will never be lost.
-
Those who reject it will face suffering.
Adam became the first Prophet, teaching his children how to worship Allah, cultivate the land, and live righteously.
The Tragedy of Qabil and Habil
Adam and Hawwa had many children. Each birth produced twins, and Allah commanded cross-marriage between the pairs. Qabil (Cain) envied that his twin sister was destined for Habil (Abel). Out of jealousy, Qabil killed Habil—committing the first murder in history.
Allah sent a crow to show Qabil how to bury his brother’s body. This event taught humanity about death and the destructive power of envy.
Adam (A.S.) – The First Prophet
Throughout his life, Adam (A.S.) reminded his children of their purpose:
-
Worship Allah alone.
-
Avoid arrogance and disobedience.
-
Beware of Iblis, mankind’s eternal enemy.
Adam lived nearly 960 years, according to Islamic traditions. Before passing away, he advised his children to remain steadfast in worship and obedience. His death marked the end of the first Prophet’s earthly life, but his legacy continues in all humanity.
